Our Community
The
Alpine community is approximately 30 miles east of downtown San Diego, California
on Interstate 8 at the Tavern Road exit. It's a peaceful rural area, with horses
and open trails, at the foothills of Viejas Mountain. Alpine's elevation is cited
as 1,800 feet but it actually ranges from 1,700 to 2,300 feet. The small downtown
area along Alpine Boulevard and the three shopping areas afford the services to
support the residents.
Because of the physical separation with the San Diego metropolitan towns, Alpine
has its own character and culture. It has many attractive home developments and
ranches around the downtown and still retains the "night sky" atmosphere.
There are plentiful California oaks, pepper, and eucalyptus trees. Visitors are
always admiring how quiet the neighborhoods have remained.
Alpine is recognized as the Nations First Wildlife Habitat by the National
Wildlife Federation. Over 100 gardens are registered Backyard Wildlife Habitats.
Although much of the area is rural, we are within easy reach of the San Diego
metropolitan area. During the week you will see a daily exodus to "go down
the hill" to offices or companies. However, our location is ideal for people
who like to have some peace and quiet at the end of the day while still being
able to enjoy cultural activities, entertainment or sporting events on weekends.
Alpine borders the Cleveland National Forest on the eastern side of town.
At the edge of town is the Viejas Casino and the award-winning Viejas Outlet Center.
In under 30 minutes you can drive to the Cuyamaca State Park or the Laguna Mountains
for camping, hiking and, during a few times in the Winter, even playing in the
snow.
Alpine's annual events include the Alpine Viejas Days with a parade and entertainment
in September/October, the Sage and Songbirds Festival during a weekend in May,
the Alpine Summer Concerns with free music in the Community Center park every
other Sunday from May through September, the annual Independence Day Parade, and
the Alpine Village Christmas Light Parade held on the last Saturday in November.
There are many, smaller events held throughout the year.
For you techie readers with GPS capabilities, Alpine is positioned 32.84 degrees
north of the equator and 116.76 degrees west of the prime meridian.
